Peramanent Mask Exhibition
The museum has launched its permanent ‘Mask Exhibition’ on 14th March 2011, inuagurated by the Hon’ble minister for Economic Affairs which would be permanently exhibited at the ground floor of the new museum building. The exhibition has in display an array of masks which are used during religious festivals (tshechus) around the country.
Museum Closure
The recent earthquake which shook the whole nation on the evening of 18/09/2011 has not spared the fury of its 6.8 magnitude on the massive museum building. The portion of wall facing towards the east has fallen down with the window panes on the verge of collapsing. The inner structure of the building has also succumbed to damages by the quake.
Therefore, the National Museum regrets to inform all the visitors that the museum will remain closed till further notice for the safety of its visitors and for restoration works. However, the new building will remain open to the public and has plans to shift the exhibits of the old building to the ground floor of the new museum building.
Museum timing and New Exhibition
Unlike before the National Museum will remain open throughout the week except on government holidays. The museum has launched a new exhibition entitled “The collective arts of the National Museum” which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble minister for Home and Cultural Affairs on 8th October 2011. The exhibition encompasses the selected artifacts from the old museum building which is closed for restoration work after the earthquake of 18/09/2011. These exhibits are dispalyed at the ground floor of the new museum building.
